STATEMENT FROM  SENATE EDUCATION CHAIRMAN DOLORES
GRESHAM REGARDING RELEASE OF AUDIT SHOWING RECOVERY OF $425,725 IN OVERBILLING
IN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CONTRACT

(NASHVILLE, TN), August 6, 2009 – “The Comptroller’s audit report is alarming.   It is apparent that authorities at the Department of Education did not take seriously the gravity of the situation in what has proven to be an overbilling of almost a half million dollars.  They should have noticed the red flags and conducted the appropriate internal reviews since it could have been a case of fraud.”

“There is also a question of whether or not the responsible party at the department, who has now been promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Accountability, told the vendor not to go public with the information and not to disclose the information to the Department of Finance and Administration.  All of these factors call into question whether or not we have proper accountability of taxpayer money for education, especially at a time when every dollar is critical.”
