Sen. Southerland wins approval of legislation to allow
Volunteer Fire Departments to sell fireworks in Unicoi County

(NASHVILLE, TN), April 24, 2009 — State Senator Steve
Southerland
(R-Morristown) has won the approval of the full Senate on a
bill to allow volunteer fire departments in Unicoi County to sell fireworks.
The legislation, SB
2230
, was approved by a unanimous vote of the State Senate on Thursday.

Rep. David Hawk (R-Greeneville) is the sponsor of the bill in the House of
Representatives, where it also received unanimous approval.

Southerland said he expects the bill to be signed into law within the next
two weeks.  It will then require two-thirds approval from the Unicoi County
Commission before it can go into effect.

“The Unicoi County Commission
requested that this legislation be introduced and passed so that our fire
departments will have another fund-raising tool in order to provide fire
protection in rural areas that may not have coverage otherwise.”
