(NASHVILLE, TN), January 10, 2013— State Senator Rusty Crowe (R-Johnson City) has been reappointed Chairman of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee. The announcement was made by Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey as the 108th General Assembly concluded their organizational session in Nashville this week.
“I appreciate the confidence that Lt. Governor Ramsey has placed in me to serve again as Chairman of this Committee” said Sen. Crowe. “There will be many challenges in front of this committee during the 2013-2014 legislative sessions with the federal healthcare mandates required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. But, our committee has accomplished much over the last several years and I look forward to continuing to work on solutions to the many health care issues we face in Tennessee.”
The Health and Welfare Committee is responsible for public or private hospitals; health offices and their administration; institutions and services for the mentally retarded; all health care institutions and facilities; nursing homes; various health care professions, and all aspects of public welfare.
In addition, Senator Crowe was also appointed to serve on the Senate Government Operations Committee and the Education Committee. The Senate Government Operations Committee oversees legislation to create, reauthorize, reorganize or sunset departments, commissions, boards, agencies or councils of state government and review all rules promulgated by them. The Education Committee reviews all legislation regarding K-12 schools and higher education.
The General Assembly will take a brief recess to make office assignments and await budget details before convening the first week of the regular 2013 legislative session.
