Beavers and Weaver say Transportation Officials to
Hold Public Hearing on Cordell Hull Bridge
(NASHVILLE, TN), November 21, 2008 — Local State Senator Mae Beavers and newly-elected State Representative Terri Lynn Weaver announced today that there will be a public meeting to discuss the repair of the Cordell Hull Bridge. Tennesssee’s Chief Transportation Engineer Paul Degges and other DOT officials will be present to answer questions at the meeting, which will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 5 p.m. in the Smith County Bank Community Room.
“The closure of this bridge has caused severe hardship on many of our local citizens who must drive great distances as a result,” said Senator Beavers. “We will be discussing the findings of the preliminary report on the structural analysis of the bridge and a rough cost estimate for its repair.”
The Cordell Hull Bridge was deemed by the Department of Transportation’s Structures Division as deficient. A consultant engineering firm, TranSystems, has been conducting field inspections of the bridge and has agreed with the findings to close the bridge in its current condition. Beavers and Weaver say they will be looking for the Department of Transportation to provide her and local officials with a schedule for completion of the needed repairs.
“I worked on the square and know how this bridge closure has affected businesses in this area,” said Rep. Weaver. “I look forward to hearing the results of this report.”
