(NASHVILLE, TN), May 16, 2011 – State Senator Ken Yager (R-Harriman) and Representative Dennis Powers (R-LaFollette) efforts to get Governor Bill Haslam to place additional funds for Jellico Community Hospital in the state budget were successful, as the hospital was one of three statewide slated to receive payments under a supplemental appropriation amendment unveiled today. According to the lawmakers, Jellico Hospital would receive approximately $1 million under the supplemental plan.
Jellico Community Hospital, Memphis Regional Medical Center and Nashville General Hospital share in receiving the supplemental appropriation due to the amount of unreimbursed costs for treating indigent patients.
“This funding is critical to keep this hospital open,” said Senator Yager. “I have visited the hospital and talked with administrators and know how important this facility is to the citizens of this county. Without Jellico Community Hospital, many area citizens would have to travel a long distance to receive medical treatment, which can be a life-threatening problem. This is the second year we have been able to get additional funding. I am very pleased that the governor has seen the dire need for these funds in the budget.”
“Jellico Community Hospital has served the area well for many years,” said Representative Powers. “These funds will help the hospital to continue serving indigent patients and provide quality care to the citizens of Jellico and the surrounding area that is isolated from other major health-care facilities.”
