(NASHVILLE, TN), January 13, 2011 – State Senator Steve Southerland (R-Morristown) has been appointed Deputy Speaker for the Tennessee Senate. The announcement was made by Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey who also reappointed Southerland as Chairman of the Environment, Conservation and Tourism Committee.
“I am very pleased to receive these appointments,” said Southerland. “I look forward to working with our leadership team and Governor Haslam on the many issues we face in Tennessee this year.”
The Environment, Conservation and Tourism Committee hears all matters concerning energy, forestry, natural resources, conservation, game, fish, mines and minerals. The Deputy Speaker is part of the leadership team of the Senate, attending to special projects and duties assigned by the Lt. Governor.
In addition, Senator Southerland will serve as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee and will continue as a member of the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee.
The organizational session will be complete upon the inauguration of Governor Bill Haslam. The General Assembly will then take a brief recess to make office assignments before beginning the work of the 2011 legislative year.
