(NASHVILLE, TN), June 5, 2013 — State Senator Doug Overbey (R-Maryville) said today he has been informed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) that two grants have been approved for the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport in Sevierville. The grants, which when combined with the local match, will total $112,000. They were recommended through the Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics.
“Our airports are essential to pave the way for economic development of our county,” said Overbey. “This grant will assist in making needed improvements to better serve those who utilize it.”
The grants will be used to improve the hangar and terminal.
Except for routine expenditures, grant applications are reviewed by the Tennessee Aeronautics Commission (TAC), which is a five member board charged with policy planning and with regulating changes in the state Airport System Plan. The board carefully reviews all applications for grants to ensure that the proper state and local matching funds are in place and that the grants will be used for needed improvements.
The local airport was one of only nine across the state receiving grants.
