Senator Overbey announces grant for Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport

(NASHVILLE, TN), May 22, 2012  — State Senator Doug Overbey (R-Maryville) said today he has been informed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) that a $20,250 grant has been approved for the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport.  The grant, which will be combined with a $2,250 local match, was recommended through the Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics.

“Our airports are essential to pave the way for economic development of our county,” said Overbey.  “This grant will assist in securing the appropriate infrastructure to better serve those who utilize it.”

Except for routine expenditures, grant applications are reviewed by the Tennessee Aeronautics Commission (TAC), which is a five member board charged with policy planning and with regulating changes in the state Airport System Plan. The board carefully reviews all applications for grants to ensure that the proper state and local matching funds are in place and that the grants will be used for needed improvements.

The local airport was one of only six across the state receiving grants.
